How to Make Steamed Jiaozi: A Complete Guide

Steamed jiaozi, a beloved Chinese dumpling, are tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. Here’s a simple guide to making them at home.

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

Mix 2 cups of all-purpose flour with ½ cup of warm water gradually. Knead into a smooth dough, cover, and let rest for 30 minutes. Divide into small balls and roll into thin, round wrappers (about 3-4 inches in diameter).

Step 2: Make the Filling

For a classic pork filling, combine 1 lb ground pork with 2 chopped napa cabbage, 2 shredded shiitake mushrooms, 1 minced garlic, 1 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tsp sesame oil, salt, and pepper. Mix well until sticky.

Step 3: Assemble the Jiaozi

Place 1 tbsp of filling in the center of a wrapper. Fold the dough in half, pinch the edges to seal, and create pleats for a traditional look. Ensure no air remains inside to prevent bursting during steaming.

Step 4: Steam the Jiaozi

Line a steamer with cabbage leaves or parchment paper to prevent sticking. Arrange jiaozi, leaving space between them. Steam over high heat for 15-20 minutes until the dough is translucent and the filling is cooked.

Step 5: Serve

Enjoy hot with a dipping sauce of soy sauce, vinegar, and chili oil. These dumplings are perfect for family meals or festive gatherings!
