How to Make Steamed Tofu: A Simple Guide

Steamed tofu is a healthy, versatile dish that highlights the ingredient’s delicate texture and mild flavor. Here’s a basic guide to preparing it, along with popular variations.

Basic Steamed Tofu

Start with firm or silken tofu (300g). Drain and press it to remove excess water, then cut into 1-inch cubes. Place the tofu on a heatproof dish. For a simple version, drizzle 1 tablespoon of light soy sauce, ½ teaspoon sesame oil, and a sprinkle of white pepper. Steam over high heat for 8–10 minutes until heated through. Garnish with scallions and a few drops of chili oil for extra flavor.

Flavorful Variations

* Savory Egg Tofu: Beat 2 eggs, mix with 100ml water and a pinch of salt. Pour over the tofu before steaming. Top with minced pork or shrimp for a heartier meal.

* Mushroom & Ginger Tofu: Layer sliced shiitake mushrooms and fresh ginger under the tofu. Add 1 tablespoon oyster sauce and 1 teaspoon sugar to the sauce for an umami-rich taste.

* Spicy Sichuan Tofu: After steaming, top with a mix of chili sauce, Sichuan peppercorn powder, and roasted peanuts for a fiery kick.

Tips

Use fresh tofu for the best texture. Avoid over-steaming, as it may make the tofu mushy. Serve hot with rice or as a light side dish. Steamed tofu is not only easy to make but also a nutritious option for any meal!
