How to Make Braised Beans and Potatoes: A Simple Guide

Braised beans and potatoes is a comforting, one-pot dish loved for its hearty flavors and easy preparation. Here’s a step-by-step guide to mastering this classic recipe.

Ingredients:

- 500g fresh green beans, trimmed and snapped into 2-inch pieces

- 2 large potatoes, peeled and cubed

- 1 onion, sliced

- 3 garlic cloves, minced

- 2 tbsp cooking oil

- 1 tbsp soy sauce

- 1 tsp sugar

- Salt and pepper to taste

- 1 cup water or broth

- Optional: 5-spice powder or a bay leaf for extra depth.

Instructions:

1. Prep the veggies: Wash beans and potatoes, then cut them into uniform sizes for even cooking.

2. Sauté aromatics: Heat oil in a pot over medium heat. Sauté onions until translucent, then add garlic and cook until fragrant.

3. Brown the potatoes: Add potatoes and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until slightly golden.

4. Simmer together: Toss in beans, soy sauce, sugar, salt, and pepper. Pour in water/broth, then bring to a boil.

5. Braise: Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 20–25 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and beans are crisp-tender. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

6. Finish and serve: Adjust seasoning, remove bay leaf if used, and serve hot with steamed rice or crusty bread.

Tips: For a richer taste, add diced carrots or a splash of vinegar at the end. Enjoy this wholesome dish as a satisfying weeknight meal!
