How to Make Perfect Chinese Fried Dough Sticks (Youtiao)

Chinese Fried Dough Sticks, or *Youtiao*, are a beloved breakfast staple, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Making them at home is simpler than you think—follow this guide to master the golden treat.

Ingredients & Prep:

You’ll need 300ml all-purpose flour, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp baking powder, and 250ml water (adjust for dough consistency). Mix dry ingredients, then gradually add water to form a smooth, non-sticky dough. Knead for 10 minutes, then let it rest, covered, for 1 hour.

Shaping & Proofing:

Roll the dough into a 1cm-thick rectangle. Cut it into 2cm-wide strips. Place two strips together, pressing the centers lightly. Use a chopstick to press a line down the middle of each pair—this helps them puff up evenly when fried. Let the shaped dough rest for another 20 minutes.

Frying to Perfection:

Heat oil in a wok or deep pan to 180°C (350°F). Gently slide the dough strips into the hot oil, frying in batches. They will puff up and turn golden brown in about 2-3 minutes per side. Flip once for even cooking. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Serving Tips:

Enjoy *Youtiao* plain, dipped in soy milk, or as a sandwich with *doujiang* (soy milk). For extra flavor, brush with a mix of soy sauce and sesame oil while still warm.

With crispy edges and a tender core, homemade *Youtiao* will elevate your breakfast routine!
