How to Make Braised Beef and Radish: A Complete Guide

Braised beef and radish is a comforting, hearty dish that tenderizes beef while infusing radish with rich, savory flavors. Here’s a detailed guide to mastering it.

Ingredients: 500g beef brisket (cut into 2-inch cubes), 2 white radishes (peeled and halved), 1 onion (sliced), 3 garlic cloves (smashed), 1-inch ginger (sliced), 2 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp oyster sauce, 1 tbsp cooking wine, 5-star anise, 1 cinnamon stick, 3 cups beef broth, and cooking oil.

Steps:

1. Sear the Beef: Heat oil in a pot over medium-high. Add beef cubes and sear until browned on all sides (about 5 mins). Remove and set aside.

2. Sauté Aromatics: In the same pot, sauté onion, garlic, and ginger until fragrant (2 mins). Return beef, then add soy sauce, oyster sauce, and cooking wine. Stir to coat.

3. Simmer: Pour in beef broth, add anise and cinnamon. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 1.5 hours until beef is tender.

4. Add Radish: Place radish halves among the beef. Simmer uncovered for 30-40 mins until radish is soft and absorbs the broth.

5. Adjust and Serve: Discard anise and cinnamon. Taste and add salt/soy sauce if needed. Garnish with scallions and serve hot with rice.

Tips: For extra flavor, marinate beef in soy sauce and wine for 30 mins before searing. Choose firm radishes to hold their shape. Enjoy this melt-in-your-mouth dish with a steaming bowl of rice!
