How to Make Homemade Red Bean Paste: A Simple Guide

Homemade red bean paste is a versatile ingredient used in desserts like mooncakes, tangyuan, and pastries. Making it from scratch is easier than you think—just follow these steps.

First, soak 1 cup of dried red beans in water for at least 4 hours (or overnight) to soften them. Drain and rinse the beans, then place them in a pot with fresh water (cover by 2 inches). Bring to a boil, then simmer on low heat for 1.5–2 hours until the beans are tender and easily mashed.

Drain the cooked beans and let them cool slightly. For a smooth paste, blend the beans with ¼ cup of sugar (adjust to taste) and a pinch of salt using a food processor or blender. If you prefer a chunkier texture, mash them with a fork.

For richer flavor, cook the blended paste in a non-stick pan over medium-low heat. Stir constantly for 10–15 minutes until thickened. For extra depth, add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil or melted butter. Let it cool completely before storing in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.

This homemade red bean paste is free from preservatives and can be customized with vanilla or honey. Enjoy it in your favorite treats!
