How to Make Corn Tortillas: A Comprehensive Guide

Corn tortillas, a staple in Mexican cuisine, are versatile and easy to make at home. Here’s a simple guide to crafting perfect tortillas every time.

Ingredients:

2 cups masa harina (corn flour), 1 ¼ cups warm water, ½ teaspoon salt.

Steps:

1. Mix Dough: Combine masa harina, salt, and warm water in a bowl. Knead for 5 minutes until a smooth, pliable dough forms. If too dry, add water 1 tsp at a time; if too sticky, add a little masa.

2. Rest Dough: Cover the dough and let it rest for 15–30 minutes. This hydrates the masa, making it easier to shape.

3. Shape Tortillas: Divide dough into 12–15 equal balls. Place a ball between two sheets of plastic and press with a tortilla press or a heavy skillet until thin (⅛-inch thick).

4. Cook Tortillas: Heat a comal or non-stick skillet over medium-high. Carefully place the tortilla and cook for 30–45 seconds per side until lightly browned and slightly puffed. Keep warm in a cloth towel.

Variations:

- Flour Tortillas: Substitute masa harina with all-purpose flour, add shortening, and adjust water.

- Flavored Tortillas: Mix in pureed spinach, roasted red peppers, or cheese for color and taste.

- Baked Chips: Cut tortillas into wedges, brush with oil, and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 10–15 minutes until crispy.

Serve with tacos, enchiladas, or as a side to soups. Homemade tortillas taste fresher and pair perfectly with any dish!
