How to Make Braised Beef: A Step-by-Step Guide

Braised beef, a beloved comfort dish, boasts tender meat and a rich, savory sauce. Here’s a simple guide to recreate it at home.

Ingredients: 500g beef chuck (cut into cubes), 3 tbsp cooking oil, 1 sliced onion, 2 chopped garlic cloves, 1 tbsp ginger, 2 star anise, 1 cinnamon stick, 3 tbsp soy sauce, 2 tbsp oyster sauce, 1 tbsp sugar, 1 cup beef broth, and water.

Steps:

1. Sear the beef: Heat oil in a pot over medium-high heat. Add beef cubes and sear until browned on all sides. Remove and set aside.

2. Sauté aromatics: In the same pot, sauté onion, garlic, and ginger until fragrant. Return beef to the pot.

3. Season and simmer: Add soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, star anise, and cinnamon. Stir to coat the beef. Pour in broth and enough water to cover the meat.

4. Braise: Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 1.5–2 hours, or until beef is fork-tender.

5. Thicken the sauce: Uncover and increase heat slightly. Simmer for 5–10 minutes until the sauce thickens. Adjust seasoning with salt if needed.

Serving: Serve hot with steamed rice or noodles. Garnish with green onions for a fresh touch. This dish tastes even better the next day as the flavors deepen! Enjoy your homemade braised beef!
