How to Make Rose-shaped Steamed Buns: A Complete Guide

Rose-shaped steamed buns, or "meigui huamo," are delicate, fluffy, and visually appealing Chinese steamed buns. Here’s a simple guide to crafting these floral treats at home.

Ingredients: For the dough, mix 300g all-purpose flour, 3g yeast, 15g sugar, and 150ml warm water. Knead into a smooth, elastic dough, then let it rise for 1 hour until doubled. For filling, use sweetened red bean paste, black sesame paste, or savory options like minced pork.

Steps:

1. Prepare the dough: Punch down the risen dough, divide it into small portions (about 50g each), and roll each into a 10cm circle.

2. Add filling: Place a tablespoon of filling in the center, fold the edges like a dumpling, and pinch to seal.

3. Shape the rose: Gently roll the sealed dough into a log, coil it tightly from the center outward, and tuck the end underneath. For a layered effect, flatten the dough slightly, spread filling, cut into 5 strips, and twist each strip before coiling.

4. Proof and steam: Let the shaped buns rest for 20 minutes, then steam over high heat for 15-20 minutes. Turn off the heat and let them sit for 5 minutes to prevent deflating.

Tips: Brush with food coloring for vibrant petals, or sprinkle black sesame seeds to mimic rose seeds. Serve warm as a breakfast snack or dessert. These buns combine soft texture with artistic flair, making any meal feel special!
