Braised Pork and Potatoes: A Simple yet Hearty Recipe

Braised pork and potatoes is a comforting, one-pot dish loved for its tender meat, melt-in-your-mouth potatoes, and rich, savory sauce. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making this classic meal.

Ingredients: 500g pork belly (cut into 2cm cubes), 3 potatoes (peeled and halved), 1 onion (sliced), 3 garlic cloves (minced), 2 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp oyster sauce, 1 tbsp sugar, 1 cup water, cooking oil, and optional star anise or cinnamon for depth.

Instructions:

1. Sear the Pork: Heat oil in a pot over medium-high heat. Add pork cubes and sear until golden brown on all sides. Remove and set aside.

2. Sauté Aromatics: In the same pot, sauté onions and garlic until fragrant. Return pork to the pot, then add soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sugar. Stir to coat evenly.

3. Simmer: Pour in water, add star anise (if using), and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes.

4. Add Potatoes: Add potatoes to the pot, ensuring they are submerged in the liquid. Cover and simmer for 15–20 more minutes, until pork is tender and potatoes are soft.

5. Thicken the Sauce: Uncover and increase heat slightly. Let the sauce reduce until it thickens slightly, coating the ingredients.

Serving: Serve hot with steamed rice. The dish pairs well with a side of blanched greens. Enjoy this flavorful, budget-friendly meal that’s perfect for family dinners!
