How to Make Braised Winter Melon: A Simple Guide

Braised winter melon is a comforting, healthy dish loved for its tender texture and savory flavor. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making it effortlessly.

First, prepare the ingredients: 500g winter melon (peeled and cut into 2cm cubes), 2 cloves garlic (minced), 1 green onion (chopped), 1 tbsp light soy sauce, 1 tbsp oyster sauce, 1 tsp sugar, a pinch of salt, and 2 tbsp cooking oil. Optional additions like dried shrimp or mushrooms can enhance the umami.

Heat the oil in a wok over medium flame. Sauté the garlic until fragrant, then add the winter melon cubes. Stir-fry for 2–3 minutes to lightly sear the surfaces. Pour in 200ml water or broth, then add soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, and salt. Stir well to combine.

Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the wok and let it simmer for 15–20 minutes, or until the winter melon turns translucent and tender. Occasionally check the liquid level and add more water if needed to prevent burning.

Once cooked, uncover and increase the heat to reduce the sauce slightly, if desired. Garnish with chopped green onions before serving. This dish pairs perfectly with steamed rice and offers a delightful balance of sweetness and savoriness. Enjoy this easy, nutritious meal that’s perfect for any season!
