How to Make Purple Sweet Potato Flower Buns

Purple sweet potato flower buns are a visually stunning and nutritious twist on traditional steamed buns, combining vibrant color with a subtly sweet flavor. Here’s a simple guide to creating this delightful treat.

Ingredients:

- 200g purple sweet potato, steamed and mashed

- 300g all-purpose flour

- 3g active dry yeast

- 30g sugar

- 150ml warm milk (or water)

- 1 pinch of salt

Steps:

1. Prepare the dough: Dissolve yeast and sugar in warm milk; let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy. In a large bowl, mix mashed purple sweet potato, flour, salt, and the yeast mixture. Knead into a smooth dough, then let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour until doubled in size.

2. Shape the buns: Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a 15cm-long strip. Brush with a little oil, fold into layers, then coil it into a spiral. Place the buns on parchment paper, leaving space for expansion.

3. Proof and steam: Let the shaped buns rise for another 20 minutes. Steam over medium heat for 15 minutes. Turn off the heat and let them rest for 5 minutes before opening the lid to prevent shrinking.

These buns are soft, fragrant, and perfect for breakfast or afternoon tea. Enjoy the natural sweetness and eye-catching purple hue!
