How to Make Braided Bread: A Step-by-Step Guide

Braided bread, with its intricate yet elegant appearance, is a delightful addition to any meal. Here’s a simple guide to crafting this bakery favorite at home.

Ingredients:

3 ½ cups all-purpose flour, 1 cup warm milk, 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast, ¼ cup sugar, ½ tsp salt, 2 large eggs, ½ cup unsalted butter (melted), and 1 egg yolk (for glazing).

Steps:

1. Activate Yeast: Mix warm milk, yeast, and 1 tbsp sugar. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

2. Prepare Dough: In a large bowl, combine flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Add yeast mixture, eggs, and melted butter. Knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 1-2 hours until doubled.

3. Shape the Braid: Punch down dough and divide into 3 equal parts. Roll each into a 20-inch rope. Pinch the top ends together and braid the ropes tightly. Tuck the ends underneath.

4. Second Rise: Place the braid on a baking sheet, cover, and let rise for 30 minutes.

5. Bake: Brush with egg yolk. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Cool before slicing.

Variations: Add cinnamon, raisins, or cheese for extra flavor. Enjoy your homemade braided bread as a breakfast treat or side dish!
