How to Make Creative Steamed Buns: A Step-by-Step Guide

Creative steamed buns, or "hua yang mantou," are not only delicious but also fun to make, transforming simple dough into edible art. Here’s a basic guide to get you started.

First, prepare the dough: mix 500g all-purpose flour, 7g yeast, and 250ml warm water. Knead until smooth, then let it rise for 1 hour until doubled in size. Divide into small portions and flatten each into a round disc.

For shapes, let your imagination run wild. Animal designs: Roll a disc into an oval, pinch one end for a tail, and add black sesame eyes for a bunny. Flower patterns: Cut the disc into a star shape, fold each point upward, and seal the center with a red bean paste "pistil." Character buns: Use dough to sculpt faces, adding nori for eyes and smiles.

To color the dough, natural ingredients work best: spinach for green, beetroot for pink, and turmeric for yellow. Mix the puree into the dough before rising.

Steam the buns for 15 minutes over high heat. Let them rest for 5 minutes before serving. These playful buns are perfect for kids’ parties or breakfast, adding joy to every meal. With a little practice, you’ll master these edible creations!
