How to Make Spicy Rice Cakes: A Step-by-Step Guide

Spicy rice cakes (tteokbokki) are a beloved Korean street food, loved for their chewy texture and fiery, sweet sauce. Here’s a simple yet delicious recipe to recreate this dish at home.

Ingredients:

- 200g rice cakes (fresh or frozen)

- 100g fish cakes ( sliced)

- 2 cups water or anchovy stock

- 3 tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)

- 2 tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, adjust to taste)

- 1 tbsp sugar

- 1 tbsp soy sauce

- 1 green onion (sliced)

- 1 hard-boiled egg (optional)

Steps:

1. Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, mix gochujang, gochugaru, sugar, and soy sauce until smooth.

2. Cook the Base: Heat a pan over medium heat, add the sauce, and pour in water/stock. Stir well until the sauce simmers.

3. Add Ingredients: Add rice cakes and fish cakes. Cook for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and the rice cakes become soft and chewy.

4. Season and Finish: Adjust sweetness or spiceness by adding more sugar or chili flakes. Garnish with sliced green onions and a halved hard-boiled egg.

Serve hot and enjoy the perfect blend of spicy, sweet, and savory flavors! For extra crunch, add fried onions or perilla leaves.
