How to Make Chewy Mochi: A Simple Guide

Mochi, a beloved Japanese and East Asian treat, is loved for its chewy texture and sweet flavor. Making it at home is easier than you think! Here’s a basic guide to get you started.

Ingredients:

- 2 cups glutinous rice flour (mochiko flour)

- 1 cup sugar

- 1 cup water

- Cornstarch (for dusting)

- Optional fillings: red bean paste, peanut butter, or fresh fruit

Steps:

1. Mix the Dough: In a bowl, combine glutinous rice flour and sugar. Slowly add water while stirring until a smooth, thick batter forms.

2. Steam the Mochi: Pour the batter into a greased heatproof dish. Steam over boiling water for 30–40 minutes, or until the mixture turns translucent and firm.

3. Shape the Mochi: Let the steamed mochi cool slightly. Dust a clean surface with cornstarch, then place the mochi on it. Use a rolling pin to flatten it into a sheet.

4. Add Fillings (Optional): Cut the sheet into small squares. Place a spoonful of your chosen filling in the center, then fold the mochi to enclose it, rolling it into a ball.

5. Serve: Dust with more cornstarch to prevent sticking. Enjoy immediately or store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

For extra flavor, try adding matcha powder, cocoa powder, or fruit juice to the batter. Get creative with fillings like mango, ice cream, or sesame paste to customize your mochi!
