A Guide to Making Chocolate Ice Cream

Chocolate ice cream, a timeless favorite, is surprisingly easy to make at home. Here’s a simple yet delicious recipe to get you started.

First, gather your ingredients: 2 cups heavy cream, 1 cup whole milk, ¾ cup granulated sugar, ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 tsp vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. For a richer flavor, you can also add 4 oz melted dark chocolate.

Begin by whisking the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt in a saucepan. Gradually pour in the milk, stirring until smooth. Heat the mixture over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until it simmers gently (do not boil). Remove from heat and stir in the melted chocolate and vanilla. Let it cool completely, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours to chill thoroughly.

Once chilled, pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions, usually 20-30 minutes, until it thickens. For a creamier texture, transfer the churned ice cream to an airtight container and freeze for another 2-4 hours.

Enjoy your homemade chocolate ice cream plain, or top it with hot fudge, nuts, or fresh berries. This classic treat is sure to satisfy any sweet craving!
