How to Make Zongzi: A Comprehensive Guide

Zongzi, a traditional Chinese rice dumpling, is beloved for its sticky, fragrant glutinous rice and savory or sweet fillings. Making zongzi is an art, but with this guide, you can master it at home.

First, gather your ingredients: glutinous rice (soaked for 4-6 hours), bamboo leaves (washed and boiled to soften), and fillings like pork belly, salted egg yolk, red beans, or dates. For savory zongzi, marinate pork with soy sauce, five-spice powder, and Shaoxing wine for at least 2 hours. Sweet versions often use sugar or honey.

To assemble, take two bamboo leaves, overlapping them into a cone shape. Add a spoonful of rice, then fillings, and top with more rice. Fold the leaves tightly, tying with string to secure. Ensure no gaps remain to prevent leakage during cooking.

Boil zongzi in a large pot, submerged in water, for 2-3 hours over medium heat. For softer rice, let them soak in the hot water off-heat for another hour. Once cooled, unwrap and enjoy.

Experiment with fillings and shapes—pyramid for savory, cylindrical for sweet—to create your perfect zongzi!
