How to Make Perfect Salt and Pepper Shrimp

Salt and pepper shrimp is a beloved crispy, savory dish that’s easy to make at home. Here’s a simple guide to achieve restaurant-quality results.

Ingredients: 500g large shrimp, peeled and deveined; 2 tbsp cornstarch; 2 tbsp all-purpose flour; 2 cloves garlic, minced; 1 green chili, sliced; 2 spring onions, chopped; 1 tbsp salt; 1 tsp white pepper; ½ tsp five-spice powder (optional); Oil for frying.

Steps:

1. Prep the shrimp: Pat dry shrimp thoroughly. Mix cornstarch, flour, salt, and white pepper in a bowl. Toss shrimp in the mixture until evenly coated.

2. Deep-fry: Heat oil to 180°C (350°F). Fry shrimp in batches for 2-3 minutes until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels.

3. Stir-fry aromatics: In a wok, heat 1 tbsp oil. Sauté garlic and green chili until fragrant (30 seconds).

4. Combine: Add fried shrimp, spring onions, and five-spice powder (if using). Toss quickly for 1 minute to coat evenly.

5. Serve: Hot with lemon wedges or a sweet chili dip.

Tips: For extra crunch, double-fry shrimp. Adjust spices to your taste—add chili flakes for heat or a pinch of sugar for balance. This dish pairs perfectly with steamed rice or a cold beer. Enjoy!
