How to Make Fish Head Tofu: A Simple Guide

Fish head tofu is a comforting, nutritious dish popular in Asian cuisine, known for its delicate broth and tender ingredients. Here’s a basic recipe to get you started.

Ingredients: 1 large fish head (cleaned and cut into halves), 1 block of firm tofu (cubed), 2 green onions (sliced), 1 piece of ginger (sliced), 3-4 cloves of garlic (minced), 1-2 dried chilies (optional), 150ml light soy sauce, 1 tbsp cooking wine, 1 tsp sugar, 500ml water or fish stock, and cooking oil.

Steps:

1. Prep: Pat the fish head dry. Lightly season with salt and let sit for 10 minutes.

2. Sear: Heat oil in a pot over medium heat. Pan-fry the fish head until golden on both sides. Remove and set aside.

3. Aromatics: In the same pot, sauté ginger, garlic, and chilies until fragrant.

4. Simmer: Return the fish head to the pot. Add soy sauce, cooking wine, and sugar. Pour in water/stock, bring to a boil.

5. Tofu: Gently add tofu cubes. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the fish is cooked and tofu absorbs the broth.

6. Finish: Garnish with green onions. Serve hot with steamed rice.

Tips: For a richer flavor, use homemade fish stock. Adjust spice levels by omitting chilies or adding Sichuan peppercorns. This dish pairs well with a side of blanched greens. Enjoy this hearty meal that’s perfect for family dinners!
